Presentation of the Cibersabios programme in a classroom

Torrevieja has launched Cibersabios, a new school programme through which the council aims to promote healthy, critical and responsible use of new technologies among children.

The initiative will run in every school in the town during the 2026/2027 academic year and is intended for pupils in the third and fourth years of Primary Education and the first and second years of compulsory secondary education (ESO).

The first sessions began on 20 October at La Inmaculada school for the Primary stage and at IES Mediterráneo for Secondary.

Sessions tailored to each educational stage

The programme was developed by staff at the Community Prevention Unit for Addictive Behaviours (UPCCA), which belongs to the Public Health Department headed by Rosa Cañón.

According to the council’s approach, its main objective is to prevent inappropriate screen use and provide tools to help pupils manage their digital activity safely and responsibly.

For the third and fourth years of Primary, the intervention focuses on ages at which, according to the programme’s description, children begin to have more sustained contact with their own or family devices.

For the first and second years of ESO, the approach addresses a transitional stage that the initiative describes as a period of increasing use of mobile phones, social media and video games.

UPCCA technical staff will deliver the sessions using interactive and participatory activities adapted to each group’s age, with the aim of supporting learning and encouraging pupils to take part.

Rosa Cañón has advocated early intervention in classrooms and explained that the proposal does not seek to ban technology, but to educate children so that they learn to regulate their own use and enjoy safe digital leisure.

Resources and talks for families too

Cibersabios includes the participation of parents and guardians as a complement to the work that will be carried out with pupils.

The UPCCA maintains that school-based prevention is more effective when it continues in the family environment.

The programme will offer families guidance, resources and talks to establish a shared approach and clear, healthy rules for using technology at home.

Telephone numbers for information

Anyone interested can contact the UPCCA for further information about the programme by calling 607 185 249 or 672 727 627.

The unit also offers WhatsApp number 687 521 005 as a contact channel.
