The exhibition ‘Modelando el duelo’, by teacher Conchi Vaquero Mercader, can be visited until 7 November in the exhibition room at Torrevieja’s Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre.
The show opened on the afternoon of Friday 30 October in the presence of the artist and a group of students who have taken part in the project through her art therapy workshops.
Ceramics and other materials provide a means of expression for exploring loss, memories and emotions from an artistic and personal perspective.
An exploration that goes beyond bereavement
The pieces offer an interpretation of the stages of grief and the feelings experienced by people facing a loss, encompassing experiences beyond the absence of a loved one.
The subjects explored include dreams that do not come true, the loss of health, changes from one stage of life to another and places that people leave behind.
Changes in a person’s own identity also have a place within an approach that invites reflection on how losses can be integrated into an individual life story.
Pieces from workshops for older people
Participants in the art therapy workshops, who are older people, contribute their own pieces to this collective exhibition and take part in its dialogue between ceramics and lived experience.
Their work uses modelling and hands-on making to give shape to feelings, memories and personal experiences, showing different ways of expressing them through clay.
The artist also shares fragments of her own history and emotions, which find a form of expression in the pieces displayed along the exhibition route.
The transformation of clay from shapeless material into a unique piece through the hands serves as an image of the new forms of expression and meaning that difficult experiences can find.
A space for visitors to take part
The exhibition includes an interactive area where visitors can leave their own mark and participate directly in the artistic experience offered by the show.
The initiative is supported by Torrevieja Town Council through its Culture Department and the Joaquín Chapaprieta Torregrosa Municipal Culture Institute, as well as by La Espiral.
