Rower Ander Martín Domingo, who was born in La Mata, has been awarded the Nito prize by the Peña Madridista de Torrevieja, the town’s Real Madrid supporters’ association. The fifth consecutive presentation took place on Sunday 18 October at Bianco&Sea Emotion, near the Real Club Náutico, honouring the sporting values associated with Joaquín García Paredes.

The award was collected by the athlete’s father, Félix Martín, and his niece Lotti, alongside sports councillor Diana Box. Joaquín García Martínez, Nito’s son, presented the trophy, maintaining the family connection behind the association’s annual recognition.

A local rower receives the honour

This year’s award recognises a Torrevieja athlete involved in coastal rowing. The account of the ceremony highlights Martín’s recent European Beach Sprint title, a sporting achievement cited as part of the recognition given by the supporters’ association.

Francisco Reyes presented the gathering. Association president José Manuel Ortega Francés thanked those whose support has enabled the award to continue. Juan Carlos García Sala, known as Capi, then spoke on behalf of players from the association who had played under Nito.

Remembering Joaquín García Paredes

The prize commemorates Joaquín García Paredes’s involvement in football as a player, coach and administrator, as well as his work identifying players for Real Madrid. Through the award, the association seeks to keep that legacy alive while recognising hard work, determination and team spirit.

In his speech, Capi stressed the importance of preserving Nito’s spirit. The presentation by Nito’s son connected that family memory with the tribute to the rower from La Mata, bringing different sporting backgrounds together at the same gathering.

Family members collect the trophy

Félix Martín conveyed his son’s pleasure at receiving the honour and explained that the rower’s support for Real Madrid had been passed down by his grandfather. Diana Box also expressed thanks on the athlete’s behalf and highlighted his dedication to rowing.

The occasion included Real Madrid’s centenary anthem. The Torrevieja supporters’ association is also preparing to mark its 70th anniversary in 2028. In the meantime, the Nito prize remains a distinct part of its activities, offering recognition for sporting values that extend beyond football and the association’s own teams.
