Torrevieja marked Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Monday 19 October with an AFECÁNCER event in Plaza de la Constitución. An information stand, the reading of a manifesto and a pink balloon release expressed support for people affected by the disease and their families. The association has also announced a presence at Torrevieja University Hospital from 19 to 23 October.

A manifesto in Plaza de la Constitución

AFECÁNCER president Vicky Meneses read the manifesto during Monday morning’s commemoration. The pink balloons were released afterwards as a symbolic expression of solidarity and unity in the face of breast cancer.

Mayor Eduardo Dolón attended alongside Trudy Páez, the councillor responsible for NGOs and citizen participation, and other members of the municipal council. The information stand brought awareness-raising into a public space, alongside a gathering in support of people affected by cancer and their families.

Hospital presence announced for this week

The association’s activities extend beyond the event in the square. In an interview broadcast by Torrevieja Radio on 16 October, Victoria Meneses announced that AFECÁNCER would be at the University Hospital during the week of 19 to 23 October. The planned initiative aims to introduce the association’s work to the public and highlight prevention, early detection and support for cancer patients.

The interview also addressed the help that the organisation provides to people with cancer and their families. Associations, volunteers and relatives were part of the discussion about the support needed by those receiving a diagnosis and by the people around them.

Awareness and support

The annual commemoration on 19 October highlights the importance of detecting breast cancer early, advancing research and treatment, and supporting patients. Physical, emotional and social needs can continue both during and after the disease. These concerns form part of the wider awareness month in October, which keeps timely diagnosis and access to quality care on the public agenda.

In Torrevieja, the gathering in the square and the announced hospital presence place information and support at the heart of this week’s awareness activities. They bring together public recognition of the disease and the association’s work with patients and their families.
