Benidorm Town Council has installed precautionary supports in two rooms at CEIP Serra d’Aitana after cracks were found in the primary school building, education councillor Maite Moreno has explained.

The measure affects the music classroom and an adjoining room used for hearing and language support, both on the ground floor of the school building.

Moreno maintains that the intervention will not disrupt the school’s activities, although teaching previously provided in those rooms is being reorganised within the school itself.

Music lessons move to ordinary classrooms

Hearing and language support has been relocated to another available space, while music lessons will take place in each year group’s ordinary classroom.

The school management reported the cracks to the council’s technical services, which are monitoring their development and decided to install the supports as a precaution.

The technical staff are also assessing whether precautionary work is needed in any space on the first floor of the school building.

Updating the refurbishment project

Meanwhile, the council is updating the documentation for the school’s refurbishment project so that it can apply for the works to be carried out under the Plan Edificant programme.

The review covers the requirements and costs of the planned work, which already included strengthening the structure, the councillor responsible for education has explained.

Moreno has denied that the council administration concealed defects at the school, responding to criticism from the Socialist group over its handling of the cracks.

PSOE requests explanations

PSOE deputy spokesperson Sergi Castillo has announced questions to the regional education department and the council’s education department about the school’s condition and progress with its refurbishment.

Castillo says that a technical report dated 25 October 2024 already warned of cracks and requested updated costed project documentation and the installation of monitoring markers to track their development.

The Socialists are seeking explanations about the updating of that document and the reactivation of Plan Edificant at this school in Benidorm.
