The Club de Actividades Subacuáticas Buzeo Torrevieja removed 139 kilos of rubbish and collected 860 cigarette ends during its twelfth Beach and Seabed Clean-up, held at Cala Ferris on Saturday 24 October.
The initiative brought together volunteers working both on land and underwater, with children taking part in the shore-based side of the day’s activities.
The collection combined everyday materials with bulky objects and equipment that had ended up where they did not belong, at this spot on Torrevieja’s coastline.
Glass and wood top the collection
The clean-up inventory records 35 kilos of glass and a further 35 kilos of wood, the two categories accounting for the greatest weight among the materials removed.
These were followed by 18 kilos of plastic and 16 kilos of textiles, as well as 12 kilos of hygiene products, including tampons, sanitary towels and nappies.
Volunteers also recovered eight kilos of paper, eight kilos of cans and seven kilos of fishing equipment, completing the 139 kilos in the figures released by the club.
The 860 cigarette ends were picked up individually and are presented as a separate count from the categories of rubbish measured in kilos.
A VHS player and a V16 beacon
Items found included an old VHS video player, a pump for paddleboards and a V16 warning beacon, alongside a shower curtain and several shoes.
The list also includes diving masks and snorkels, in addition to the fishing-related materials entered into the inventory drawn up for the clean-up.
The event forms part of Buzeo Torrevieja’s activities linking rubbish removal with awareness of the need to conserve beaches and the seabed.
The club thanked the volunteers for taking part and the businesses and organisations supporting this twelfth edition, including Torrevieja Town Council.
It is calling for that commitment to continue throughout the year, placing the emphasis on prevention: keeping waste out of the sea, as well as organising days to remove it.
