Torrevieja’s municipal Popular Party group tabled an amendment replacing the PSOE motion on green infrastructure, trees and urban shade at the ordinary council meeting on Monday, 26 October.
Its spokesman, Federico Alarcón, argued that the Socialist proposals were already included in municipal projects under construction or being planned, and outlined proposed work in several parts of the town.
Eras de la Sal and Alto de la Casilla
According to the figures presented by the PP, redevelopment around Eras de la Sal and the International Habaneras Competition auditorium will provide more than 5,000 square metres of green areas and planted beds.
The two schemes will incorporate more than 180 trees and palms, including tamarisk, mulberry and pine trees, intended to provide shade as they grow.
The plans also envisage green corridors, including a route from Villa Amalia to Los Locos beach through Eras de la Sal and the Vista Alegre, Libertad and Juan Aparicio promenades.
For Alto de la Casilla and Sector 25, the PP puts the open-space area at around 80,000 square metres, intended for gardens, recreation, children’s play areas and sport.
The Alto de la Casilla park project includes 537 trees, alongside 12,270 shrub plants, another 1,540 plants and 4,844 square metres of lawn.
The design combines that vegetation with tensioned fabric canopies and planted structures to create covered areas.
Pergolas and shade in school playgrounds
On Paseo de la Libertad, planted space will increase from 450 to 1,550 square metres, according to the municipal group’s presentation, with new beds also around Plaza Capdepont.
Twelve benches with pergolas and climbing plants, together with three large fixed pergolas with vegetation, are proposed for the fairground and the area around the customs building.
Alarcón also said projects were being drawn up to increase shade in school playgrounds and specific solutions were being studied for Paseo Juan Aparicio.
The amendment includes a call on Spain’s national government to carry out outstanding restoration works at the Poniente breakwater, Acequión and the paths at Los Náufragos and Lo Ferrís.
