The charity project Brotes de una nueva vida, led by Torrevieja residents Eduardo Aranda Hortelano and Ana Cutillas Núñez, has raised €1,900, all of which will go to AFECÁNCER’s rehabilitation room for people who have recovered from breast cancer.
The initiative combined poetry and painting through charity postcards sold for €1, featuring two original illustrations by Cutillas accompanied by a poetic composition by Aranda.
The donation has been presented to Mª Victoria Meneses, president of AFECÁNCER Torrevieja, following a campaign supported by shops, businesses, organisations and contributions from individual donors.
Art reflecting the emotional journey
The postcards explore the emotional experience of illness, from diagnosis to hope and overcoming its challenges, and seek to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by those diagnosed and their families.
The illustrations symbolically depict a man and a woman embracing, with the pink ribbon forming the central element of the composition.
The inclusion of both figures is also intended to give visibility to men, who are generally less prominent in breast cancer awareness campaigns.
Verses by Eduardo Aranda Hortelano, a primary school teacher and poet, accompany the images to express the emotional journey that provides the project’s connecting theme.
Support from the local community
When the campaign was presented, APYMECO reported that more than 40 businesses and organisations were collaborating, creating a network that helped promote the postcards and involve local residents.
The list of participating outlets and groups included food shops, pharmacies, florists, physiotherapy centres, stationers, the Asociación Amas de Casa and the Sociedad Cultural Casino.
Ana Cutillas began her training at the Municipal Painting School in 1997 under Manuel Balaguer and has worked in techniques including ceramics, printmaking, silk painting, oils and watercolours.
Before then she had been self-taught, and her work can be found in various countries across Europe and the Americas.
The organisers have thanked everyone who contributed to the initiative, whose financial result is tied to a specific purpose: supporting rehabilitation through AFECÁNCER.
