Benidorm will begin refurbishing the final section of Avenida del Periodista Emilio Romero this Monday, 2 November, between Avenida del Mediterráneo and Avenida de Alcoy, creating a pedestrian-priority space with more shade and new facilities.

The project has a budget of €520,503 and an estimated construction period of three months, according to the town hall.

The work covers the section closest to Levante beach and aims to improve the link between the seafront and the streets further inland.

Trees, accessible toilets and shaded areas

The plans include replacing the entire paved surface, planting trees and other vegetation, and installing street furniture as part of a layout that will give priority to people on foot.

Pergolas and shaded areas, benches, accessible public toilets and mist-cooling features are also planned for this section of the avenue.

The councillor responsible for the water cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, describes the scheme as a climate refuge for people heading to the beach or returning from it.

The council’s aim is to reduce the effects of heat and add facilities along this connection with the seafront, including toilets that people with reduced mobility can use.

Work resumes after the high season

The first phase took place before the summer and involved installing new drinking-water pipes and sewerage infrastructure.

Work was paused during the high-season months and is now resuming as fewer people use the route to the beach, a timing the councillor says is intended to cause less disruption.

In preparation for the start, signs have already been put up along the street to prevent parking and inform residents that work will begin on Monday.

González de Zárate, who also oversees parks and gardens, says the finished layout will provide a model for future street improvements alongside Avenida del Mediterráneo, between Europa and Ametlla del Mar, as part of its second phase.
