Benidorm’s festival groups, known as peñas, and the Festes Majors Patronals organising committee will have around 50 drums, each holding 50 litres, to collect used cooking oil during the celebrations, with door-to-door collection planned for the morning of Wednesday 11 November.
The Consorci Mare waste consortium will provide the containers and offer another way to hand over the oil: its mobile recycling centre in Calle Herrerías on the afternoon of Tuesday 10 November.
How to request a container
Interested groups should contact l’Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge, which will coordinate distribution of the drums and also hand out the biodegradable bags supplied by the consortium.
Consorci Mare president José Ramón González de Zárate and environment councillor Mónica Gómez are encouraging groups to request containers and share them with other peñas nearby.
The scheme will allow cooking oil produced during the celebrations to be stored separately for subsequent recycling, rather than being poured down the sink.
The consortium, which manages waste for 52 municipalities in Alicante province, is thus providing a dedicated collection for the festival groups and the organising committee.
Extra bins and daily collections
The street-cleaning department will also supply 300 rolls of bags and increase staffing and technical resources during the Festes Majors Patronals.
The councillor responsible, Luis Navarro, has announced just over 50 additional waste containers for the centre and locations hosting festival events or activities.
These include Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España, the fairground and the porrat traditional market area.
Alongside the night-time service in areas with the highest concentration of festival groups, the operation provides for two additional collections each day, at 10am and 5pm.
Festivals councillor Mariló Cebreros says this cleaning reinforcement forms part of the special coordinated operation for the celebrations.
That operation brings together the town hall, Local Police, National Police, Civil Protection, the fire service, the Festes Majors Patronals organising committee and l’Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge.
