The history of posters for Orihuela’s Moors and Christians festivities will be the focus of a talk by Ángeles Vidal Guevara on Tuesday 3 November at 7pm at the Fernando de Loazes Library.
The speaker is chronicler of the Santas Justa y Rufina Moors and Christians festival association and will address the subject under the title El cartel de fiestas. Historia y singularidades, exploring festival posters’ history and distinctive features.
Admission to the session is free, subject to the room’s capacity, as it is for the other talks in this cultural lecture series.
A look at heritage through poster art
The talk forms part of ‘La impronta del arte en Orihuela: escultura, pintura y cartelería’, a series on sculpture, painting and posters organised by the University of Alicante’s Orihuela centre and Cátedra Arzobispo Loazes.
The programme is directed by Maribel Peñalver Vicea and coordinated by Antonio Luis Galiano Pérez, the city’s official chronicler, with the Fernando de Loazes State Public Library hosting the sessions.
Its purpose is to introduce audiences to the legacy of creators who have contributed to Orihuela’s history and heritage through a range of artistic disciplines.
At the 3 November session, Vidal will bring her perspective as the festival association’s chronicler to an examination of the history and particular characteristics of Moors and Christians posters.
Four Tuesdays devoted to Orihuela’s art
The series began on 20 October with a talk by Galiano Pérez about the painter Eduardo Vicente, his connections with Orihuela, his friendships and his work.
The second session, held on 27 October, was devoted to the sculptor José Seiquer Zanón and was delivered by Julio Calvet Botella.
After Vidal’s talk, the programme will conclude on Tuesday 10 November with Ramón Cuenca Santo discussing his own work as a sculptor and maker of religious images, under the title El escultor e imaginero Ramón Cuenca Santo. Su obra en el mundo.
