SC Torrevieja lost 2-1 away to Villarreal C after taking the lead from the penalty spot and holding their advantage until the closing stages, having played with ten men from the 55th minute onwards.

The defeat came on Saturday 31 October at the league leaders’ ground, following the goalless draw with Ontinyent 1931 CF at the Nelson Mandela stadium in the previous round of league fixtures.

Jota gives Torrevieja the lead from the spot

Diego Piquero’s side went ahead in the tenth minute when Jota converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Lucas, putting the visiting team from Torrevieja 1-0 in front early in the match.

The visitors protected that advantage for much of the game against a Villarreal C side who had approached the fixture as the leaders of their group in Tercera Federación.

The match became more difficult for Sporting Costablanca in the 55th minute when Conesa was sent off, leaving Torrevieja to play the remainder of the contest with one player fewer.

Two goals in the closing minutes

Villarreal C levelled in the 84th minute through Andero, with Torrevieja still holding the lead they had established near the start of the match up to that point.

N’Diaye scored the home side’s second in the 90th minute to make the final score 2-1, leaving the visitors without a point despite having led going into the closing stages.

The away fixture had promised a demanding test: in Villarreal CF’s preview, published on 28 October, the reserve side topped the table with 21 points and had recorded four consecutive victories.

In the same pre-match assessment, Torrevieja were thirteenth with eight points; those figures describe the position before the match rather than an updated table following the latest round of fixtures.

Crevillente next at the Nelson Mandela

Torrevieja’s next league commitment will be a home match against Crevillente Deportivo at the Nelson Mandela stadium, following this defeat away in the province of Castellón.

In their previous home appearance against Ontinyent, Torrevieja had become more of an attacking presence during the second half, although the match finished with the score still at 0-0.
