Alicante TAM users must exchange old journeys by 31 December

Journeys bought under the old fares require an in-person exchange; topping up online, in the app or at a machine beforehand can erase those journeys.

People wait outside a transport customer service office in Alicante.

Users of Alicante’s TAM transport system who still have journeys bought under the previous fares must exchange them before travelling and pay the difference between the previous fare and the new price, with a deadline of 31 December.

The office on Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio saw queues on Monday, 2 November, as people arrived to update their cards so they could continue using their remaining journeys.

Passengers complained about the information they had received on the fare changes and the requirement to complete the exchange in person rather than remotely.

What happens to old journeys

The new fares took effect on 1 October, and journeys from earlier top-ups could still be used until the end of that month, on 31 October.

Since November, any journeys remaining from those top-ups must be exchanged before they become valid for use again within the transport system.

The exchange preserves those journeys upon payment of the difference between the old and new fares; any journeys that have not been exchanged will be deleted after 31 December.

Where to exchange them

As well as the TAM office, the exchange can be completed at physical outlets in the sales network, including kiosks, tobacconists and customer service points.

Anyone holding journeys purchased before 1 October should exchange them before topping up their card at street machines, through the application or on the website.

The warning concerns the balance of old journeys: topping up through those channels without first completing the exchange causes those journeys to be lost automatically.

Prices of the main tickets

Under the new fare structure, an ordinary single ticket costs €1.50 per journey, while the ten-journey Bono Mobilis Multiviaje is priced at €5.40.

The thirty-journey version of the Bono Mobilis Multiviaje costs €16.20, while the thirty-journey Bono Mobilis Escolar has a price of €8.50.
