Elche CF has issued an apology to supporters for the problems experienced when leaving Martínez Valero stadium after Sunday’s match against Valencia and is preparing changes to parking arrangements and access routes.

The club acknowledges that the pedestrian crossings provided were insufficient during a phase of construction that has reduced the space available for walking along Avenida José Esquitino Sempere.

The match attracted around 30,000 supporters and ended with significant queues and criticism of the congestion as spectators left the ground.

Parking, signs and pedestrian movements

The club says it has spent weeks using drones to study the movements of people arriving at and leaving the stadium, to analyse the routes taken by spectators.

It is working to reorganise the car park, improve its signs and review the different routes to avoid points of conflict between vehicles and pedestrians.

Elche CF will continue working with the council to introduce new mobility and safety measures while redevelopment of the area around the stadium continues.

Works 50% complete, according to the local government

The local government puts progress on the works at 50%, three months after construction began, with the project covering around 25,000 square metres around the stadium.

The scheme includes new avenues, two roundabouts, accessible pavements and a green corridor to transform the approaches to Martínez Valero.

Earthworks have already been carried out along Avenida Manuel Martínez Valero and Avenida José Esquitino Sempere, and the main service networks, such as water and lighting, have been installed.

Pavements and tree pits for future planting are being completed on Manuel Martínez Valero, while work on José Esquitino Sempere involves levelling part of the route and laying kerbs.

Signs and diversions are being used during construction to maintain access on match days, although further road closures or changes to traffic arrangements may occur.
