Fifty students from IES Manuel Tárraga Escribano in San Pedro del Pinatar took part in a beach clean and environmental education activity on Monday 2 November at Torre Derribada, within the Salinas y Arenales regional park.

The group consisted of pupils in the first four years of compulsory secondary education who serve as eco-delegates in the school’s environmental education project.

The activity was part of the Libera project, promoted by SEO/BirdLife in partnership with Ecoembes, and combined removing litter from the beach with identifying and analysing the waste they found.

Understanding litter to prevent its abandonment

Inmaculada Torres, the regional director-general for natural heritage and climate action, and San Pedro del Pinatar mayor Pedro Javier Sánchez took part in the activity.

Torres highlighted young people’s involvement in caring for natural spaces and explained that studying the materials collected helps reveal the consequences of leaving them in ecosystems.

The work therefore goes beyond removing waste: it also has an educational purpose, helping participants understand the problem and prevent rubbish from ending up in the natural environment again.

The regional partnership in figures

The regional government has worked with Libera since 2021 on environmental education, participation and citizen science in protected natural areas. This partnership has delivered 50 activities involving 2,214 participants.

The separate tally for the “1m² contra la basuraleza” mobilisation, which covers the period since 2017, records 612 collection points and 10,759 volunteers across the Region of Murcia.

In 2026, 54 collection points and 822 participants have been recorded. Meanwhile, Aulas Libera has reached 260 classes at 76 schools, involving 6,692 pupils.

Another strand of the project, “Mi Pueblo Sin Basuraleza”, has 19 active localities, including San Javier.

Two further activities this weekend

The programme will continue on Saturday 7 November with “1m² por el Mar Menor” on El Carmolí beach in Bahía Bella, where participants are due to collect, identify and analyse litter along a route of approximately 500 metres.

On Sunday 8 November, the Sierra de la Pila regional park will host a family orienteering and litter-collection workshop, using maps and compasses along a route of around 1.5 kilometres.

Both activities are open to the public. Activities under this partnership receive co-financing from the European Union’s ERDF funds.
