CD AT Torrevieja FS have progressed through a round of the cup by beating Albatera, a team from a higher division, in a penalty shoot-out after normal time ended in a 4–4 draw.

Qualification followed a match of shifting fortunes: Torrevieja had to overturn the visitors’ opening goal and later saw Albatera cancel out two separate leads of two goals.

A comeback before the interval

Albatera opened the scoring to make it 0–1, during an opening spell in which Torrevieja were also hampered by accumulating five fouls within the first few minutes of play.

That situation required the home side to manage their defending with the threat of a ten-metre kick, while trying to recover ground against opponents competing at a higher level.

Torrevieja’s response enabled them to turn the score around and reach half-time ahead at 2–1, reversing the position they had faced at the start of the match.

After the restart, the home team scored again to make it 3–1, but Albatera answered with a goal that brought the contest back into the balance at 3–2.

From 4–2 to a six-metre shoot-out

Torrevieja extended their advantage once more to 4–2 through a team move, before the visitors switched to a five-player attacking approach as they sought a way back into the game.

Albatera managed to recover that deficit and make it 4–4, the score at the end of normal time, sending the decision in the cup tie to kicks from six metres.

It was CD AT Torrevieja FS who secured qualification in the shoot-out, following a match in which neither team had managed to establish a decisive advantage during normal play.

The match report also highlights the involvement of youth-team players Samuel Lalaguna and Íker Manjón, who took part in the tie won by Torrevieja’s first team.

The result takes Torrevieja into the next round of the cup, having overcome a higher-division opponent and secured their passage after the teams finished level in normal time.
