Rojales has added fourteen murals to walls around its town centre following the first Urban Art Festival, held from 23 to 25 October after weather alerts forced the original dates to be postponed.

The initiative, organised by the Culture department headed by Inmaculada Chazarra, brought together artists from different parts of Spain to create new works in spaces around the municipality.

A first edition bringing art into the streets

The festival was launched to give artistic talent greater visibility, encourage creativity and improve the appearance of walls and spaces in the centre through urban art and contemporary forms of expression.

Chazarra has highlighted the involvement of three female graffiti artists and defended the contribution artists make to improving the appearance of these places.

The councillor describes the result as an “open-air museum” and a way to diversify the cultural programme, with works that bring artistic creation closer to everyday life.

The Culture councillor also connects these interventions with Rojales’ identity and appeal, as goals of the council’s commitment to introducing contemporary creative work into the urban landscape.

The murals and the Cuevas del Rodeo

The department is encouraging residents and visitors to discover the new creations and suggests rounding off their next visit to Rodearte with a walk past the town centre murals.

The municipal programme announces that gathering for Sunday 1 November at the Cuevas del Rodeo, starting at 10:00, with cave workshops open to visitors, craft demonstrations and participatory workshops.

Mask-making, esparto grass craft and painting workshops are scheduled from 11:30 in caves 1, 10 and 11, according to the event poster.

Music is also included in the announcement: the Sunny Side of the Street jazz quartet is due to perform from 12:00 to 14:00 at the Cuevas del Rodeo.

A walk past the new murals and the Rodearte gathering therefore offer two different ways to explore artistic creation in Rojales: completed interventions on the town centre’s walls and activities planned at the caves.
