A Costa Rican couple living in Torrevieja and their four children are preparing for a new chapter in Ferroy, a village in the Asturian municipality of Allande, with support from the Principality’s Land Bank.
The organisation has facilitated the rental of eight plots covering a total of 4.7 hectares, together with a home and a cattle shed, to enable the family to settle in the countryside.
The arrangement has been handled through Arrendalia, the Principality of Asturias programme for renting rural land.
Bringing landowners and prospective tenants together
The Land Bank’s involvement has connected an owner wishing to rent out land with a family seeking to establish itself in Asturias, rather than transferring ownership of the plots to the family.
José Ramón Feito, the organisation’s manager, has visited the municipality to learn about the family’s circumstances and the opportunities offered by the arrangement.
The project will bring six people to Ferroy, four of them children, linking their move from Torrevieja to an opportunity to settle in a rural community.
Access to a house and a cattle shed accompanies the rental of the plots, bringing residential and agricultural resources together in the same arrangement for this new stage of their lives.
The Land Bank’s programmes
The Principality places this initiative within its work to make land more accessible, maintain agricultural activity and encourage people to settle in villages.
Arrendalia helps bring rural plots into use through rental agreements, one of the ways the Land Bank connects owners with people interested in working in the countryside.
The organisation also runs a farm succession programme which, according to the figures cited by the Principality, has enabled 13 people to take over from previous operators.
Another of its tools is a rural land exchange programme, intended to improve the structure and viability of agricultural holdings.
The case of this Torrevieja-based family forms part of that policy of opening up access to available land and creating new opportunities to live in the Asturian countryside.
