Torrevieja is preparing a new service to expand the prevention of drug dependency and other addictions in schools from 2027. The Local Government Board approved the tender on Friday 23 October, with a base budget of €82,488.99 for the first two years.

The contract, promoted by the Public Health Department, will initially run for two years and allows for two possible extensions of one year each.

The service is intended for pupils in Years 5 and 6 of Primary education and Years 3 and 4 of ESO in every school in the municipality, complementing the work of the Community Prevention Unit for Addictive Behaviours, known as the UPCCA.

How classroom interventions will be shared

Specialists from the successful contractor will deliver sessions in those four year groups, coordinating with schools and secondary schools and with the municipal prevention team.

UPCCA professionals will continue to work with Years 3 and 4 of Primary and Years 1 and 2 of ESO, in accordance with the municipal plan.

This division is intended to extend coverage and maintain continuity between educational stages by combining municipal resources with those provided through the new contract.

Content will be adapted to pupils' ages and needs, offering tools to recognise risky situations, make responsible decisions and develop healthy habits.

The programme will also address emotional management, protective factors against addiction and risks associated with the digital environment.

Cibersabios and emotional wellbeing

During the current school year, the UPCCA has already begun working with Years 3 and 4 of Primary and Years 1 and 2 of ESO through Cibersabios, the municipal project focused on responsible use of new technology.

That programme aims to prevent risky behaviour associated with screens and the digital environment, while the new service will extend interventions to the year groups covered by the tender.

The municipal unit also coordinates Emotional Wellbeing Promotion programmes for children and teenagers aged six to sixteen in Torrevieja's schools.

Approval of the tender opens the way for wider school coverage in the coming academic years, with the service expected to start in 2027 and any extensions subject to the contract.
