Torrevieja has held the opening of the 61st senior and 25th junior world championships in boat angling from anchored vessels, with 93 senior competitors and 40 juniors at an event bringing together sixteen national teams.

A parade through the centre and the ceremony at the Municipal Theatre introduced a week of sporting activity based around Marina Internacional Yacht Club and the waters off Torrevieja.

Music and national teams in the town centre

The band of the Ciudad de Torrevieja “Los Salerosos” musical society, conducted by Alejandro Gómez, led the procession alongside the Daimana carnival troupe.

Representatives of the participating delegations followed the band carrying their flags, as residents and visitors watched the procession make its way through the town’s shopping streets.

The official event at the Municipal Theatre was presented by Ade García, with speeches in both Spanish and English to help visiting international teams follow the proceedings.

The welcome speakers included sports councillor Diana Box Alonso, Valencian fishing federation president José Segura and Spanish federation representative Jesús Garay during the formal opening ceremony.

The formal programme featured the presentation of the delegations and their anthems, as well as an address by FIPS-M delegate Carlos Vinagre and the international federation’s anthem.

Torrevieja vocal group Sette Voci then performed “Never Enough”, “Habanera salada” and “Cantares”, before a reception was held in the theatre foyer.

From official practice to competition rounds

The programme sets aside Monday 26 October for official practice, with activity on the water scheduled from 09:00 to 15:00 and practice standings due to be released at 16:30.

The first official round is scheduled for Tuesday 27 October, followed by the second on Wednesday 28 and the third on Thursday 29 October.

Friday 30 October is reserved as a contingency and closing day, with a meal for anglers and skippers at 13:30, the closing ceremony at 19:00 and a gala dinner at 20:00.

The championships are organised by the Spanish, international sea sport fishing and Valencian federations, with support from the council’s sports department and Marina Internacional Yacht Club.
