The University of Alicante starts its course in artificial intelligence applied to healthcare management on Tuesday 20 October at 16:00 at Torrevieja’s new Interuniversity Centre in the AGAMED building. Running until 19 November, the programme uses a hybrid format, with in-person teaching on Tuesdays and live online sessions on Thursdays.

This is news of the start of teaching, not an announcement that applications are open. According to information released by the council on 19 October, pre-registration closed on Sunday 18 October. The enrolment fee is €150.

Tools for managing healthcare services

The course aims to give participants artificial intelligence tools to support decision-making and address management problems. Its practical approach covers applications in hospitals, primary care, health and social care settings, public administration and private healthcare organisations.

Personalised tutoring and work on practical cases are intended to help participants apply the material in different professional settings. The focus is the management of services, resources and care processes. Starting the course does not amount to introducing a new clinical service or reporting healthcare outcomes already achieved.

Timetable, eligibility and accreditation

Classes run from 16:00 to 20:00 between 20 October and 19 November. On Tuesdays, participants will attend the University of Alicante’s Torrevieja centre within the AGAMED university building. Thursday teaching will take place online in real time.

The programme is aimed at university graduates with higher-level qualifications and professionals in the A1 and A2 groups. The council’s announcement states that successful participants will receive accreditation for 40 hours of university training and four ECTS credits. It also describes an option for collaborating organisations to nominate five working professionals for a fee exemption; this does not establish that new places are now available.

A programme shaped by local needs

The course forms part of Aula GESTAS, the university’s permanent programme for healthcare management and technology applied to health. It was developed following consultation with Torrevieja University Hospital, Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital and the town council, whose workforce includes nursing, psychology and social work professionals, among other related disciplines.

Academic coordination is provided by Loreto Maciá Soler from the university’s Faculty of Health Sciences; Vicente García Román, head of Preventive Medicine at Torrevieja University Hospital; and Víctor Pérez Cantó, director of Nursing at Vithas Hospitals and a university lecturer.

The teaching team brings together computer engineers Francisco Javier Ferrández Pastor and Manuel Platero Horcajadas, members of the university’s TYS research group; Melanie López Pastor, responsible for nursing teaching at Torrevieja University Hospital; and doctor and consultant Joaquín Uris Selles. The mix combines technological knowledge with experience of healthcare services.
