San Pedro del Pinatar Council and the Official College of Pharmacists of the Region of Murcia are preparing an agreement to develop a pharmacy support programme for older people, patients taking several medicines and residents in vulnerable circumstances.
The project aims to make treatment easier to follow and prevent medication errors, while also seeking to strengthen patients’ ability to manage independently.
Health councillor Valentín Henarejos and representatives of the professional body discussed the proposal this week, although its technical and financial conditions still need to be defined.
Medication organised by local pharmacies
One of the planned tools is a personalised dosage system, known in Spanish as SPD, through which pharmacies prepare and organise each patient’s medication on a weekly basis.
This preparation follows the instructions prescribed by the patient’s doctor and is intended to help people take their treatment correctly, particularly when they need several medicines each day.
The approach focuses on improving adherence to treatment and reducing missed doses and confusion that can make everyday medication management more difficult for the people concerned.
Health monitoring and social support
The programme also envisages coordinated work between pharmacies, municipal services and the Red Cross, adding personal support alongside the organisation of patients’ prescribed treatments.
Possible activities include regular telephone calls, home visits, health guidance and social support, as part of a closer and more personalised approach to care.
The project’s aims include preventing avoidable complications and reducing isolation or loneliness, alongside helping the people receiving support to maintain their independence.
Henarejos has argued that older people and those who find managing their medication more difficult should have access to professional support close to home, with the intention of reassuring both patients and their families.
An agreement still being prepared
The councillor has also highlighted pharmacies’ role as neighbourhood healthcare establishments and the council’s intention to build on that proximity when expanding support services.
The council and the professional body will continue working on the future agreement, intending to incorporate the programme into municipal work on health and support for vulnerable people.
