More than 2,000 people attended the Tenorio experience at San Javier’s cemetery on the evening of Saturday 24 October, according to the account given by culture councillor David Martínez.

Over 200 local residents and artists took part in a programme combining a performance of José Zorrilla’s play with a musical and artistic walk through the cemetery grounds.

The Grupo de Teatro San Javier led the performance of ‘Don Juan Tenorio. Sueño y realidad en el cementerio de San Javier’, which formed the centrepiece of the evening.

A walk with music and scenery

The experience began with a walk inside the cemetery accompanied by choirs, choral societies and string and wind ensembles, before the theatrical performance took place.

The live music also featured traditional auroros singers and members of San Javier’s Conservatory and Murcia’s Higher Conservatory of Music as part of the cultural programme.

The Asociación de Belenistas de San Javier, which creates nativity scenes, and various local religious brotherhoods prepared the decoration that formed the setting for the experience in the cemetery.

The councillor highlighted the collective nature of the production and described it as a cultural tribute to San Javier’s ancestors, extending beyond the performance of the play itself.

An initiative dating back to 2014

The project began in 2014 with the aim of bringing the cemetery closer to the public and highlighting its heritage and cultural significance through an experience different from an ordinary visit.

Martínez linked that original intention to discovering the cemetery through culture, emotion and beauty, and stressed the involvement of local residents in shaping the project over the years.

The councillor also drew attention to the cemetery’s artistic, architectural and sculptural value, placing the grounds themselves at the heart of the initiative alongside Zorrilla’s dramatic text.

The account of this year’s event places the next Tenorio performance in 2027, following a night when theatre, music and the contribution of local groups once again shared a setting.
