Bibliotekcafe has launched a new series in Torrevieja combining science communication and live rock music, with its opening session held on Friday 23 October at 20:30.

Researcher Pablo Vicente Munuera and the band Brickbat led the launch of a project designed to make science accessible to audiences of all kinds through a shared learning and leisure activity.

A talk between songs

The venue’s cultural manager, Esperanza Meseguer, introduced the event with a question about the connection between a song, scientific curiosity and the way people listen to the world.

Pablo Vicente Munuera’s contribution alternated with live performances by Brickbat, making the rock songs part of the scientific discussion throughout the opening session of the series.

Torrevieja’s education councillor, Ricardo Recuero, attended the event, which took place in a venue bringing together books and cultural activities for its visitors.

As well as delivering the first talk, Pablo Vicente Munuera is the organiser of the initiative and will be responsible for coordinating and leading the series’ subsequent events.

A Torrevieja researcher and a young band

Munuera trained in computing and holds a doctorate in Cell Biology from the University of Seville, with a career spanning more than ten years in research.

His professional experience includes postdoctoral work at University College London and a Marie Curie fellowship, before returning to Torrevieja after spending almost six years in London.

The collaboration with Bibliotekcafe brings that research experience into a programme designed to share knowledge beyond the usual format of an academic lecture.

Brickbat’s musicians are aged between fifteen and sixteen: Thiago Cuevas on bass, Mario Aguilar on vocals, Alejandro Azuero on guitar and Aarón Esquiva on drums.

For this opening performance they were also joined on guitar by Agustín Esquiva Brotons, the owner of the venue and head of the brand.

The launch therefore brought together a local researcher’s contribution and the work of a young band within a series conceived to connect science communication, music and Torrevieja’s cultural life.
