San Javier has retained Ecovidrio’s Green Flag after collecting 301,580 kilos of glass packaging during June, July and August, according to the summer campaign results released by the municipality this October.

Recycling those containers prevented the emission of 174 tonnes of carbon dioxide, according to the figures published by the council as part of its account of the summer’s results.

The municipality earned 698 points in the campaign, a score that Ecovidrio places among the best in the Region of Murcia and which accompanies the renewal of the environmental recognition.

An environmental activity as part of the award

As part of the prize, the organisation will arrange an awareness-raising activity in San Javier, which may take the form of a clean-up in a natural setting or a session with environmental educators in the town.

These are two alternative formats for an activity designed to bring recycling closer to residents through a practical initiative, while also recognising the volume of glass recovered over the summer months.

The seventh edition of the Green Flags Movement involved 120 councils and more than 12,000 hospitality establishments across the five autonomous communities taking part in the initiative, including the Region of Murcia.

Hospitality businesses and recycling centres contribute

In San Javier, more than 160 hospitality businesses had joined the campaign by late August to respond to the increased quantities of glass packaging generated during the busy summer season.

The council explained at the time that the initiative sought to involve establishments and promote glass collection for recycling among both local residents and visitors spending the summer in the municipality.

The recycling centres in San Javier and Santiago de la Ribera also promoted the campaign during that period, with the aim of increasing the quantities of glass collected compared with previous years.

The renewed flag now reflects the outcome of that summer effort, which focused on recovering glass packaging and combining the involvement of the hospitality sector with participation by the wider public.
