Elche Local Police closed a vehicle storage site in Torrellano Alto on Tuesday 27 October, near Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport, according to the municipal update released on Wednesday.

The compound covers 8,000 square metres and has capacity for up to 1,000 cars; that figure describes the site’s capacity, not the number of vehicles present when it was closed.

The operation is a new intervention within the council’s inspection and regularisation programme for parking sites near the airport, where individual cases are at different administrative stages.

Four closures and another awaiting judicial action

The council reports four sites closed and a fifth prevented from opening, while the closure of a sixth facility remains subject to judicial proceedings.

The combined capacity of the sites affected by the various measures exceeds 5,000 vehicles, according to the municipal figures, rather than representing their simultaneous occupancy.

The Torrellano Alto closure follows measures announced in Saladas and El Altet, where interventions involved facilities with around 500 cars and a combined area of approximately 10,000 square metres.

Inspections and documentation for each business

Since stepping up checks between April and May, the council says it has inspected more than 100 vehicle storage sites, with over 50 Local Police interventions.

That work also includes 46 requests for regularisation sent to the operators of these businesses since 4 June.

The procedure involves identifying the activity and those responsible, checking authorisations and requesting a descriptive report and a technical certificate covering the applicable requirements.

The three-month deadline concerns submission of those documents; after examining them and giving the parties concerned an opportunity to be heard, the council decides what measures each case requires.

A planning framework still being prepared

Alongside the inspections, Elche is preparing a special planning document to establish where these activities may operate and under what conditions; the document has not yet been approved or entered into force.

The council explains that its 1998 General Plan does not expressly include this parking use on non-developable land among activities eligible for authorisation through a declaration of community interest.
