Benidorm has opened a €100,000 funding round to support non-professional women’s sport, with grants of up to €20,000 per club and a 15-calendar-day application period starting on Wednesday 28 October.

The scheme is aimed at local associations and clubs with teams of girls, teenagers or women, as well as organisations running programmes to encourage sporting participation among them.

The rules, approved by the local governing board, were published in Alicante province’s official gazette on 27 October, according to sports councillor Javier Jordá.

Requirements for clubs

Applicant organisations must be legally constituted and have been listed in Benidorm Town Hall’s Municipal Register of Sports Organisations for at least one year.

They must also be non-profit bodies, be up to date with their tax obligations and have properly accounted for grants received in previous years.

The funding covers activities, projects and programmes promoting non-professional women’s sport that are consistent with the municipality’s overall planning for sport.

Activities already scheduled by the Sports Department are excluded, as are directly allocated named grants to organisations and clubs that have been awarded direct subsidies.

How the funding will be allocated

A technical committee will assess applications against criteria including how long the club has existed, the number of female athletes registered with sports federations and the organisation of sporting activities.

Cooperation with the Sports Department on activities and events will also be considered, alongside federation fees, refereeing costs and travel expenses for women’s teams.

Funding will be distributed according to the principles of publicity, transparency, competitive participation, objectivity, equality and non-discrimination, with a ceiling of €20,000 for each successful organisation.

Submitting an application

The required documents can be submitted at the town hall’s general register or online through the municipal electronic office within the announced application period.

Jordá placed the call within the council’s cooperation with local clubs to make sport more accessible to women, describing a support scheme that is being offered again this year.
