Parque con zona de retención de aguas pluviales, caminos y vegetación en Torrevieja

Torrevieja has 37.6 kilometres of stormwater pipes and 64,738 cubic metres of storage capacity across nine strategic locations, including two large floodable parks. The figures appear in AGAMED’s 2025 Sustainable Development Report, presented and approved on Monday 19 October by its board of directors, chaired by mayor Eduardo Dolón.

The document brings together projects and service indicators for 2025. Its figures should therefore not be read as works opened this Monday, nor as a fresh weather warning. They provide an account of the city’s drainage infrastructure, the investments recorded by the water company and the maintenance of its networks.

Nine locations for temporarily storing rainfall

The retention areas allow rainwater to be held temporarily and released in a controlled way during wet weather. According to the report shared by the council, the system combines hydraulic infrastructure with nature-based solutions to reduce pressure on urban drainage. Of the 37.6-kilometre network, 35.7 kilometres operate by gravity and 1.9 kilometres use pumping.

The report also highlights €3.9 million invested in stormwater infrastructure within the port area. The intervention includes hydrodynamic separators to deal with pollutants carried by surface runoff, alongside improvements to drainage management.

Aguas Nuevas park has not yet been inaugurated

Another project covered is the multifunctional floodable park in Aguas Nuevas. The council says it will be inaugurated shortly but gives no specific date. It should not, therefore, be understood as a new facility already open to the public.

The scheme has a planned investment of more than €1 million and covers over 4,100 square metres. It includes a skatepark and skating bowl integrated into a sustainable drainage system, together with more than 1,500 square metres of rain gardens, native vegetation and measures intended to encourage biodiversity.

Network renewal and sewer maintenance

Across the wider water system, the report records €2,397,308 in renewal and €1,128,260 in investment during 2025, totalling €3,525,568. These are the figures given under network modernisation, which the document sets out separately from other interventions such as the port works.

Preventive maintenance included cleaning 322 kilometres of sewers and 5,513 street drains, as well as inspecting 174,051 metres of network. A further 1,164 metres of pipes were renewed and 185 covers replaced with sealed alternatives. The company reports removing 221 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste, including wet wipes, masks and gloves.

Help with water bills and reuse of treated water

The social section records €374,868 from the Social Fund to help 1,044 families pay their water bills, working with municipal social services. A further €739,288 was financed without late-payment interest through 1,070 payment arrangements. These amounts relate to activity in 2025 rather than a new assistance scheme announced today.

On resource management, AGAMED reports reusing 8,105,796 cubic metres of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation, representing all the water treated during that year. The report therefore covers flood prevention alongside the day-to-day running of water services and financial support for households.
