The University of Alicante’s Orihuela centre–Cátedra Arzobispo Loazes opens a free lecture series on the city’s artistic heritage on Tuesday 20 October. The first session starts at 19:00 at the Fernando de Loazes State Public Library and explores painter Eduardo Vicente’s connections with Orihuela.
The series is entitled “La impronta del arte en Orihuela: escultura, pintura y cartelería”, covering sculpture, painting and poster art. Four talks are scheduled on consecutive Tuesdays, ending on 10 November. Admission to all the lectures is free, subject to the capacity of the room.
Opening talk on Eduardo Vicente
Orihuela’s official chronicler, Antonio Luis Galiano Pérez, is coordinating the programme and will also deliver the opening lecture. His talk, “El pintor Eduardo Vicente: Orihuela, sus amigos y sus obras”, examines the personal and artistic ties that linked the Madrid-born painter with the city.
Maribel Peñalver Vicea, director of the university’s Orihuela centre, will introduce the opening session. The lecture poster confirms both the date of 20 October and the seven o’clock start at the library.
Four Tuesdays exploring local heritage
The second talk takes place on 27 October, when Julio Calvet Botella will speak on “Un escultor: José Seiquer Zanón”. This brings sculpture into a programme that begins with painting and the connections between an artist and the city.
On 3 November, María Ángeles Vidal Guevara will discuss “El cartel de fiestas. Historia y singularidades”, focusing on the history and distinctive features of festival posters. The session adds the graphic expression of local celebrations to the subjects covered by the series.
The final lecture is scheduled for 10 November: “El escultor e imaginero Ramón Cuenca Santo. Su obra en el mundo”. Ramón Cuenca Santo himself will take part in this closing session, which examines his sculpture and religious imagery.
All four sessions will be held at the Fernando de Loazes Library in Plaza de Ramón Sijé. Together, the programme explores artists associated with Orihuela and different forms of its cultural heritage, ranging from painting and religious sculpture to the posters created for festivities. The opening lecture is the first of these four opportunities to explore that artistic legacy.
