The Vega Baja Sostenible waste consortium has received two grants from the Valencian government worth a combined €270,000 to improve its facilities and encourage waste separation. The funding concerns the district’s recycling centre network, which includes centres under construction in Los Montesinos and Rojales, consortium president Francisco Cano has explained.
The consortium manages waste for 27 municipalities in the Vega Baja. The funding comprises a €200,000 grant for facilities and a further €70,000 for materials supporting separate waste collection and environmental awareness.
Equipment for the recycling centre network
The first grant includes €144,627.91 to purchase equipment such as containers, weighing scales and self-compacting units for the network’s fixed recycling centres and the waste transfer plant in Dolores. Another €55,372.09 will fund landscaping works at the Dolores and Almoradí recycling centres and the Dolores transfer plant.
Cano distinguished between the centres’ different stages of development: Almoradí and Dolores are already operating, while Los Montesinos and Rojales are still being built. The funding announcement does not mean that the two new recycling centres have opened to the public.
Materials to help households separate waste
The second grant will pay for funnels for separating household cooking oil, reusable woven bags, information magnets, sorting bins and biodegradable bags for organic waste. The consortium plans to deliver the materials to all 27 councils for distribution to residents, aiming to improve the separation of waste at source.
An education campaign is also under way, with environmental educators accompanying schoolchildren on visits to mobile recycling facilities. Activities cover waste reduction, prevention and reuse, alongside the importance of taking items requiring specific treatment to the consortium’s recycling centres.
These items include small electrical and electronic appliances, household batteries, larger batteries, used oils, paint and bulky household items. The campaign introduces pupils to the role of the recycling centre network in managing these different types of waste.
Alongside the school activities, the consortium has launched a survey to assess how well residents know its recycling centre network. It aims to identify improvements that could encourage more people to use the facilities.
