The 32nd Villa de San Javier bird competition expects to bring together more than 1,200 birds from 23 to 25 October, according to the organisers’ announcement. Visitors will be able to see the exhibition throughout Saturday 24 October and on the morning of Sunday 25 at the Príncipe de Asturias centre in Santiago de la Ribera.
The San Javier Ornithological Society is organising the event with support from the town council. Its schedule separates the judging day, Friday 23 October, from the two days when the public can view the participating birds.
Colour and posture at the heart of judging
National-level judges will assess the birds during Friday’s session. The competition focuses on colour and posture, with canaries as well as other fauna, hybrids and exotic birds taking part.
Society president Germán Tezanos highlighted the variety of colours among the 600 birds entered in the colour category. The posture competition will feature 350 birds and, he said at the presentation, is the only contest of its kind in the Region of Murcia.
The organisers expect around 200 more birds than at the previous edition. The event brings together breeders from across the region and elsewhere in Spain, continuing a competition with a 32-year history in San Javier.
Public visits over the weekend
The exhibition is scheduled to open to visitors all day on Saturday 24 October and on Sunday morning, 25 October. The awards presentation is planned for noon on Sunday, during the final day of the competition.
Tezanos presented this year’s event alongside sports councillor Sergio Martínez on 16 October. The society president thanked the sponsoring businesses for their involvement and drew attention to the birds that visitors will be able to see at the exhibition.
Martínez, meanwhile, acknowledged the organising society’s work and offered municipal support to help the competition continue. He invited residents to visit the exhibition in Santiago de la Ribera, which also welcomes enthusiasts from within and beyond the Region of Murcia.
