La Lonja auditorium in Orihuela will host the musical Mamá Mía this Thursday 5 November at 7.30pm, a Maracaibo Teatro production with free admission until the venue reaches capacity.

The company presents a tribute to mothers across different generations through theatre, music and humour, accompanied by versions of some of ABBA’s best-known songs.

The event is organised by Miguel Hernández University’s Vice-Rectorate for Culture, Equality and Diversity and Orihuela Council as part of their cultural programme.

Different experiences of motherhood

The show adopts a style close to comic monologue to explore the lives of women with different personal and family backgrounds, from single and working mothers to homemakers.

Combining humour and sensitivity, the production addresses the contradictions, efforts and rewards associated with motherhood, rather than concentrating on just one generation or type of family.

Its portrayal includes mothers who are caring, tired, cheerful, self-sacrificing, brave or stressed, as part of an approach bringing together comedy and emotion on stage.

The performance also includes women who do not want to become mothers, daughters and sons, and fathers who are actively involved in bringing up their children.

In doing so, it extends its focus to men who share family responsibilities and to the relationships of care and everyday family life surrounding motherhood.

Written by Cristina Macià

The script and dramaturgy are by Cristina Macià, who also appears in the cast alongside Marina González and Juan Carlos García Bernal.

The ABBA song versions feature the voice of Emma Torrecillas, accompanying a production that combines theatrical performance and music.

The announced performance takes place on Thursday evening at La Lonja, with admission remaining free subject to the number of places available in the auditorium.

The 7.30pm starting time and free entry until the venue is full are the key practical details for this cultural event in Orihuela.
