Businesses in Orihuela can apply from 21 October to take part in the third Christmas Window Display Competition for Local Shops, which has a total prize fund of €3,000.

The call for applications was published on Tuesday 20 October in Alicante’s provincial official gazette, with registration closing on 9 November 2026 and both dates included in the application period.

Twenty calendar days to apply

The application period runs for twenty calendar days from the day after publication in the gazette, according to the announcement by the Commerce Department, headed by Vicente Pina.

Individuals or legal entities with a registered office or territorial base in the municipality of Orihuela may participate if they meet the conditions of the General Subsidies Ordinance and the competition rules.

Interested businesses can consult the rules and obtain the necessary documentation through Orihuela Town Council’s online administrative portal and the Commerce Department.

Recognising shopkeepers’ work

The initiative aims to recognise the creativity and effort devoted to decorating shop windows during the Christmas campaign, while also encouraging people to shop at businesses in the municipality.

Pina has argued that local shops should take centre stage at Christmas and highlighted the time and work that shopkeepers put into their window displays.

The councillor presented the competition as a way to encourage residents to walk through the streets, enjoy the Christmas atmosphere and make their purchases in local shops.

A third edition supporting local commerce

The department wants to maintain the competition and involve more businesses in decorating shopping streets, with the aim of making them more attractive to residents and visitors during the festive period.

Pina also linked shopping at local businesses with supporting employment and the municipality’s economy in his appeal for participation in this new edition.

The competition forms part of the council’s programme of support for commerce, using the Christmas campaign to raise the profile of businesses and recognise the dedication of their staff.
