Torrevieja’s Coro Maestro Casanovas performed in Elche on Saturday 24 October at the third and final concert in the 2026 Encuentros Corales series, sponsored by the Federació de Cors de la Comunitat Valenciana (FECOCOVA).
The concert took place at the parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, bringing together four ensembles from different municipalities across the Valencian Community.
Joining the Torrevieja choir were Elche’s Coral Illice Augusta, the youth section of the Orfeón Crevillentino from Crevillente and the Grup Polifònic Ars Nova from Xàbia.
From musical theatre to habaneras
Conducted by Antonio Zamora Meseguer, Coro Maestro Casanovas presented a programme combining musical theatre, African American spirituals, habaneras, Cuban son and Latin American songwriting.
The selection included Jonathan Larson’s Seasons of Love, arranged by Emerson, alongside the spiritual Same Train, in an arrangement by Parker and Shaw.
Torrevieja’s own musical tradition was represented by Habanera salada, composed by Ricardo Lafuente and performed in an arrangement by Martínez Guirao.
The programme also featured Negro Bembón by Eliseo Grenet, arranged by Electo Silva, and Locuras by Silvio Rodríguez, in an arrangement by Liliana Cangiano.
Four ensembles share the final performance
Once the individual performances had finished, all four choirs came together on stage to sing Esta tierra, a work by Javier Busto with words by Francisco Pino.
The joint performance was conducted by Cristian Fernández Rocamora, the director of Coral Illice Augusta and the organiser responsible for the choral gathering.
After the concert, the host choir provided refreshments and members of the four ensembles shared a meal, continuing the social side of the meeting beyond the musical performances.
40th anniversary concert in December
Coro Maestro Casanovas is also preparing to mark its 40th anniversary with a concert scheduled for 5 December at 9pm at Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre.
Tickets for the anniversary performance will be free and available from the theatre box office and online, as the ensemble celebrates four decades of activity connected with Torrevieja’s cultural life.
