The La Mata and Torrelamata Residents’ Association has submitted a request to Torrevieja council asking it to examine and adopt measures to address growing pigeon numbers in different parts of La Mata.
The submission sets out residents’ complaints about dirt and nuisance, particularly the build-up of droppings and feathers on terraces, balconies and other parts of buildings.
The association has included photographs supplied by residents themselves to document the problems they are bringing to the council’s attention.
Breeding controls and deterrents
One proposal is to examine methods that could control the pigeon population and limit breeding, as part of a municipal response to the problem raised by local residents.
The association also requests deterrents in public spaces where pigeons regularly gather, together with additional cleaning at the locations most affected by the birds.
The action it seeks therefore combines population control with measures targeting the places where pigeons congregate and the removal of accumulated dirt.
Cooperation with property owners’ associations
The residents’ proposals are not confined to public spaces: the association considers it important to involve property owners’ associations in maintaining terraces and balconies.
It suggests that the council consider sending an information notice reminding owners of the importance of keeping those spaces clean and removing droppings as they accumulate.
Options it wants examined for buildings include suitable devices such as anti-perching spikes or netting, with animal welfare respected throughout the measures under consideration.
The association advocates coordinated action by the municipal authorities and property owners, making prevention, cleaning and control of pigeon numbers the central elements of its request.
Its stated aim is to prevent the nuisance from persisting or moving from one area to another, rather than addressing each affected location in isolation.
The association places this request within its work of bringing residents’ everyday concerns to the relevant authorities and seeking solutions to problems affecting the neighbourhood.
