Rojales held its first Breast Cancer Solidarity Walk on Sunday 25 October, organised by the local branch of the Asociación Alicante para la Lucha contra el Cáncer with the backing of the town council.
Residents walked approximately five kilometres through the town centre from Malecón del Soto, under the slogan ‘Let us walk for the same cause’.
Pink T-shirts and the accompaniment of a batucada percussion group marked a day of support for people affected by the disease and for their families.
A statement on prevention and support
Sensi Cartagena Chazarra, president of the association’s Rojales branch, read a statement focusing on breast cancer prevention, early detection and research into the disease.
The statement also called for support for those affected throughout the course of the illness, alongside the advances needed to tackle it and its effects.
Local resident María José Carbonell Senent, who has overcome breast cancer, shared her experience and highlighted the importance of support from family, society and healthcare services during recovery.
Mayor Antonio Pérez took part in the walk and thanked the association for its work offering guidance and support to those affected, while also praising the response from local residents.
Pedro Llopis, the councillor for Sport and Health, highlighted cooperation between public authorities, businesses, associations and residents, reaffirming the council’s commitment to continue backing initiatives of this kind.
Businesses and individuals donated prizes
The day included a prize draw featuring gifts donated by businesses and individuals, with the draw numbers linked to the race numbers bought by participants in the walk.
The T-shirt and race number involved a donation of five euros to support the awareness-raising and assistance work carried out by the Asociación Alicante para la Lucha contra el Cáncer.
The walk formed part of October’s breast cancer awareness activities, in a month when World Breast Cancer Day is marked each year on 19 October.
The council and the association thanked everyone who took part in or helped with this first edition, as well as those providing everyday support to people facing the disease.
