Rojales has asked the Valencian regional government to build a second state school to ease overcrowding at CEIP Poeta Miguel Hernández, which has 827 pupils this academic year despite an approximate capacity of 600.
The council has a municipal plot available for the new school and presents the proposal as a response to growth in the number of school-age children.
Mayor Antonio Pérez and education councillor Fernando Suria are leading the request, arguing that the municipality urgently needs additional educational facilities.
Three temporary classrooms planned
According to the figures set out by the council, the school has no room for further classrooms, and three prefabricated units are due to be installed shortly to address the shortage of space.
The request for a second school has been taken to Valencia in two meetings, one with the director-general for schools and another with the director-general for educational infrastructure.
The council says the school community and parents’ association share the demand, seeking suitable conditions for teaching, learning and everyday life at the school.
By making municipal land available, Rojales is offering to help facilitate the administrative process and work with the regional authorities on developing the project.
Shade and air conditioning improvements
Alongside its request for a structural solution, the council has completed the installation of pergolas in the school’s Bibliopatio area to provide additional shade in the playground.
The education councillor also says that almost all classrooms have air conditioning as part of work to improve temperature control at the existing school.
The Los Pasos municipal nursery school has also had air conditioning since its refurbishment in 2019, according to Suria.
The council also recalls spending more than €120,000 on repairs and other necessary work after the school’s refurbishment was completed in 2019.
The council distinguishes these maintenance and comfort improvements from the need to build another school: it argues that upgrading the existing facilities cannot replace the extra capacity it is seeking for families in Rojales.
