Torrevieja UNED’s Open University for Older Adults has started a free course exploring 20th-century art, with seven sessions scheduled from 3 to 27 November.
Dr Laura Mínguez, a professor of Geography and History, teaches the classes from 6.30pm to 8pm at the Municipal Theatre, except on 12 November, when the session will move to the International Auditorium’s Chamber Hall.
The next class, on Thursday 5 November, will cover 19th-century Spanish art, from Goya to Sorolla, as well as Modernisme.
From the avant-garde to cinema and new technologies
The course is entitled ‘20th-century art: incomprehensible art?’ and forms part of the Open University for Older Adults’ 2026–2027 programme.
Its subtitle, ‘Other faces and other arts before and after the Generation of ’27’, frames an exploration that goes beyond painting to include music, photography, cinema and video art.
The opening session, scheduled for Tuesday 3, was devoted in the programme to 19th-century antecedents and Impressionism.
Tuesday 10 will cover Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism and Futurism; Thursday 12 will examine abstraction and Surrealism, with the change of venue to the International Auditorium.
Tuesday 17 will turn to the later avant-garde movements and postmodernism, including Informalism and Hyperrealism.
Thursday 26 will address contemporary music, new instruments, musical nationalism and opera; the final session, on Friday 27, will focus on photography, cinema, video art and new technologies.
