More than forty people connected with Torrevieja’s UNED centre have taken part in a three-day cultural trip to Quesada and other towns in Jaén, with Miguel Hernández’s legacy among its main themes.
The group was led by the centre’s coordinator, Jesucristo Riquelme, assisted by journalist and cultural manager Susana Juan Aranda.
The itinerary included Quesada’s Miguel Hernández–Josefina Manresa Museum and the galleries devoted to painter Rafael Zabaleta, alongside visits to Cazorla, Peal de Becerro and La Iruela.
An exhibition by a Torrevieja student
The stay coincided with the sculpture exhibition ‘El rayo en el barro’ by Ramón Campos, a member of UNED Torrevieja’s older students’ programme.
His fired white-clay pieces are inspired by Miguel Hernández’s poetry; some of the works he donated to Orihuela have been lent by its council for the Quesada exhibition.
The exhibition will remain there until January before continuing in Orihuela and other locations, with academic backing from UNED Torrevieja.
Riquelme sought to contribute around a hundred poetry books to the Miguel Hernández ‘Llamo a los poetas’ poetry collection; its promoter, Pedro Molino, is due to receive them shortly.
Heritage, theatre and olive oil
In Quesada, the group visited the interpretation centre covering the Iberian settlement and rock shelters, while in Cazorla they explored the area around Santa María church and the underground stretch of the River Cerezuelo.
The route also included Toya’s Iberian burial chamber, painter Faustino Castillo’s work in Peal de Becerro and the family production of ‘Treasure Island’ at the Rafael Alberti Theatre.
The return journey included visits to the La Bética Aceitera cooperative to learn about Royal and Picual olive oil production, and to La Iruela castle.
The activity comes towards the end of Riquelme’s time as coordinator, with his retirement planned this year; teacher Ana Isabel Pérez Caselles will take over from January 2027.
