Valentina Belso Cervantes, representing Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja, leads the women’s standings in Spain’s ILCA 4 Cup after winning the Blue Group’s race in Pollença on Friday 30 October.
The competition, organised by Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença, began on the water with just one race completed for each of the two groups into which the fleet has been divided.
The result puts the Torrevieja club’s sailor at the top of the women’s standings after the opening day, with Saturday’s and Sunday’s racing still to come.
Light winds shape the opening day
Winds of between six and eight knots affected the first day in Pollença Bay, while the sea remained relatively calm, with waves measuring between 30 and 40 centimetres inside the bay.
Alejandro Pérez Otero, of Real Club Náutico de Vigo, won the Yellow Group’s race and holds first place in the men’s standings.
Siblings Jorge and Claudia Gómez Barnuevo, representing Club Náutico Santa Pola, began the Cup in second place in the men’s and women’s standings respectively.
Among the Mallorcan sailors, Carlos Rodríguez, of Real Club Náutico de Palma, finished seventh in his group, while Sofía Leal, of Club Nàutic s’Arenal, was ninth in her race.
A Cup bringing together 138 sailors
The event has attracted 138 sailors from nine autonomous communities, with a field comprising 86 boys and 52 girls.
The entry list is divided by age into 92 competitors in the under-16 category and 46 in the under-18 category.
The Valencian Community has 21 entrants, the same number as Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, which are the largest delegations at this Cup.
Preparations began on Thursday 29 October with competitor registration and equipment checks, ahead of the start of racing on Friday.
Racing continues through the weekend
The second day is scheduled for Saturday 31 October, with races due to begin from 11:00 in the waters of the bay.
Spain’s ILCA 4 Cup will conclude on Sunday 1 November; the programme includes the trophy presentation after racing has finished on that final day.
