The Francisco Casanovas Association’s Inclusive Music Course has begun a new edition in Torrevieja with 70 students of different ages, nationalities and abilities taking part in the programme.

Activities started on Saturday 24 October, offering music education to people with and without disabilities through a programme that combines weekly learning and performances together.

Saturday classes at Colegio Cuba

Participants attend Colegio Cuba on Saturday mornings, where tuition is adapted to different levels through the Music I and Music II classes included in the course.

The programme also has an orchestra bringing together wind, string, percussion and electronic instruments as part of the same approach to musical education.

The total of 70 students matches the figure recorded in the previous edition; the initiative also caters for people with visual, hearing or physical disabilities.

Classes are taught by Torrevieja musician Luis Sánchez, a music lecturer at the University of Murcia and a member of the research group Educación Inclusiva: Escuela para Todos.

The activity follows the teaching principles of maestro Francisco Casanovas, which seek to make learning easier and bring music to people with different abilities and personal circumstances.

Recitals and concerts beyond the classroom

Teaching includes joint performances in which the orchestra students will share the stage with the music students, who will come together as a choir.

The next recitals are planned for 11 February and 13 May, both at 8pm at the Palacio de la Música in Torrevieja.

The healthcare concert series is also continuing, with performances at hospitals, residential homes, centres and associations in Torrevieja and nearby towns.

Around fifteen performances were organised under this programme during the previous edition; the next event is on Thursday 12 November at 7pm at Apaex Torrevieja.

The course therefore combines lessons, group practice and scheduled performances so that students with different abilities can share both the classroom and the stage as part of their musical education.
