Torrevieja Council will suspend all events organised by the local authority from 29 to 31 October inclusive, as a mark of mourning for the victims of the rail accident at Urda, in the province of Toledo.

The measure is set out in a mayoral decree expressing the city’s solidarity and respect for the victims and their families, within the three days of official mourning declared by the Spanish Government.

From midnight on Thursday until the end of Saturday

The suspension will begin at 00:00 on Thursday 29 October and remain in force until 24:00 on Saturday 31 October, according to the period established in the municipal resolution.

Throughout that same period, flags outside municipal buildings will fly at half-mast as a sign of mourning.

The scope of the decision is defined by who organises the events: the resolution suspends all those organised by Torrevieja Council during these dates.

Condolences and information for residents

The decree also conveys the city’s condolences to everyone affected by the accident on the Madrid–Seville high-speed railway line, at Urda.

The mayor’s office bases the decision on its powers over political leadership, government and municipal administration under Spain’s law governing the basic framework of local government.

The text invokes Article 124.b of Law 7/1985 of 2 April, without prejudice to the powers that belong to the Local Government Board.

The resolution orders that representatives of the municipal political groups be notified of the decree, and that it be published on both the council noticeboard and its website to inform local residents.

Wednesday’s economic gala also cancelled

The council’s decision covering the next three days follows changes to institutional schedules announced on Wednesday 28 October after the accident.

These include the cancellation of the 51st Noche de la Economía Alicantina, which was due to take place at Torrevieja’s International Auditorium with the attendance of Valencian regional president Juanfran Pérez Llorca.

Torrevieja had also joined the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces’ call for a minute’s silence at 20:00 on Wednesday in memory of the victims.
