Alicante’s Chamber of Commerce has cancelled the 51st Noche de la Economía Alicantina, which was due to take place on Wednesday 28 October at 7pm at Torrevieja’s International Auditorium.
The decision was announced following the railway accident in Urda, in the province of Toledo, on Wednesday morning, as a gesture of respect and solidarity with the victims and their families.
The cancellation affects the business gala scheduled in Torrevieja, where the Chamber had planned to present its Premios Cámara 2025 awards and a distinction recognising an entrepreneurial career.
The awards planned for the gala
The programme included six awards for businesses across the province, covering commerce, industry, tourism and activities associated with innovation and international business development.
Repuestos Serca was named in the Commerce category, while the Internationalisation award was assigned to Antonio Marco and the Industry distinction to Cerámica Mayor.
Embention Sistemas Inteligentes was the business selected for Business Innovation; El Plantío Golf Resort in Tourism and Rolser in Intellectual Property completed the list of companies announced for this edition.
The Chamber had also planned to present its Gold and Diamond Medal to Eduardo López Pérez, founder of Grupo Terrazos, in recognition of his business career.
Mourning and cancelled public engagements
The president of the Valencian regional government, Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, who had been expected to attend the event, has cancelled his public agenda following the railway accident.
The cancellation of the Torrevieja gathering forms part of the cancellation of events and expressions of mourning by institutions across the province during Wednesday.
The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, FEMP, has called a minute’s silence outside town halls at 8pm on Wednesday in memory of the victims.
Torrevieja is among the municipalities joining that call, alongside other Vega Baja towns including Orihuela and Guardamar del Segura.
The federation has offered its condolences to the families and thanked the emergency services working at the scene of the accident.
