Altea’s Mercat del Convent will return to the Plaça del Convent on Saturday 7 November, with an autumn edition bringing together the sale of local produce, craft activities and live music.
The event will run continuously from 9.30am to 7pm, taking this commercial and cultural gathering back to its traditional location in the town.
It is being organised jointly by Altea Town Council’s departments of Commerce, Environment, Agriculture and Culture, with coordination provided by the Agrollotja association.
Local produce and traditional crafts
Direct-sale stalls will put local and zero-kilometre products at the centre of a programme intended to encourage responsible consumption and bring the area’s produce closer to visitors.
The programme will extend beyond shopping, with participatory workshops and demonstrations of traditional trades accompanying visitors’ trips around the market in the square.
A seed exchange will also form part of the day, an activity linked to the aim of promoting sustainable agriculture and maintaining connections with the farming roots of the surrounding area.
A bobbin-lace demonstration and a display of traditional Valencian costumes have also been announced, bringing craft skills and regional dress into this autumn edition of the market.
Live music at five in the afternoon
Among the live music on the programme will be a performance by El hombre del Norte, who are scheduled to play at 5pm as part of the market’s activities.
The motto chosen for this edition translates as ‘in November, whoever has not sown should sow’, a reference to the farming calendar accompanying the range of products and activities.
Councillors Jose Maria Borja, Jose Orozco and Pepa V. Pérez have invited Altea residents, visitors and people from across the surrounding area to take part in the day and enjoy its local products.
The event is aimed at all ages, combining direct sales with cultural and recreational activities for families, all taking place in the same square.
