Altea will hold the council meeting to draw polling station members for the 29 November general election this Saturday, 31 October, while Benidorm has scheduled its session for Monday, 2 November.
Villajoyosa, L’Alfàs del Pi, La Nucía and Finestrat will also hold their draws on Monday as part of the preparations for the election across the Marina Baixa area.
These extraordinary council meetings, locally known as «plenos de la bolita», randomly select each polling station’s chair and other members, including both those appointed to serve and their substitutes.
Benidorm’s electoral roll reaches 46,586
Benidorm has 46,586 electors for the 29 November vote, 5% more than at the previous general election; 2,217 of them live abroad and are included in the CERA overseas electoral register.
The largest proportional increase among the towns listed is in Finestrat, at 11.6%, followed by L’Alfàs del Pi at 6.5% and La Nucía at 6.3%.
Altea records an increase of 5.5%, while Villajoyosa reaches 25,555 electors after a 4% rise compared with the previous national election.
Who can be selected to serve
Councils are responsible for forming polling station teams under the supervision of the area electoral boards, using a public draw among electors registered at the relevant polling station.
Those selected must be able to read and write and be under 70; people aged 65 and over may decline the appointment within seven days.
The chair must hold a Bachiller qualification or a second-level vocational qualification, or, alternatively, a Graduado Escolar certificate or its equivalent.
The same procedure is used to appoint two substitutes for each member of the polling station team, alongside the people selected as chair and other serving members.
Notification of the appointment
Appointments as chair or other polling station members must be notified to those concerned within three days; the rules place the draws between the twenty-fifth and twenty-ninth days after the election is called.
The announced timetable therefore distinguishes the municipal draw for polling station roles from voting day: the draws will take place this weekend and on Monday, while the election itself will be held on 29 November.
