Carlos Paterson gave a recital at Torrevieja’s Sagrado Corazón de Jesús church on Saturday 24 October as part of the fifth International Organ Festival, presenting music from the Spanish Renaissance and the European Baroque.
The audience could also follow the performance on a large screen, allowing those attending to watch the performer’s work while listening to the sound of the parish organ.
From Ximénez to Cabanilles
The concert began with Joseph Ximénez’s “Batalla de 6 tonos”, opening a journey through composers associated with the Iberian tradition and the wider European organ repertoire.
The selection included Antonio de Cabezón’s “Pavana con su glosa” and Joan B. Cabanilles’s “Corrente Italiana”, two of the works featured in the early-music section.
Pablo Bruna’s “Tiento de falsas de 1 tono” and Cabanilles’s “Batalla Imperial” were also performed before the later works included in the account of the recital programme.
These compositions brought sixteenth- and seventeenth-century organ repertoire into a concert linking different periods and different approaches to writing music for the instrument in a single performance.
Pachelbel, Buxtehude and Bach
The recital continued with Johann Pachelbel’s “Toccata and Fugue in C major” and Dietrich Buxtehude’s “Passacaglia in D minor” among the European works performed for the audience.
Johann Sebastian Bach was represented by two chorales and the “Fantasia in G major”, which formed part of the repertoire offered inside the church in Torrevieja.
Paterson, an Aragonese organist, pianist and composer, holds the chair of organ at Valencia’s Joaquín Rodrigo Higher Conservatoire of Music, alongside his work as a performer.
The Asociación Cultural Amigos del Órgano Tubular organises the festival, bringing performers together around music for the instrument at the Sagrado Corazón parish church in the town.
The fifth edition receives sponsorship from Agamed, Caja Rural Central and the Municipal Institute of Culture as part of an initiative promoting music and the heritage associated with organs.
Paterson’s concert therefore added another performance to the festival programme, with the parish organ providing the meeting point between the musician, the selected repertoire and the audience.
Agamed is Aguas del Arco Mediterráneo, S. A., one of the organisations backing this music and heritage initiative.
