The first phase of the El Mojón flood protection project, with a budget of €10.5 million, remains subject to administrative procedures before construction work can begin.

The Segura river basin authority, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), has explained the outstanding procedures and administrative position of the proposed coastal scheme to the residents’ group STOP Inundaciones de El Mojón.

The meeting was chaired by Mario Urrea and gave residents’ representatives an opportunity to raise questions about the project’s two phases and the steps still required before it can be carried out.

Four dams and controlled water storage

The scheme includes four flood attenuation and hydrological correction dams in the Cañada de las Siete Higueras, together with a controlled water storage area in the vicinity of Lo Romero.

These structures are intended to reduce flows during periods of intense rainfall, limit the movement of sediment and lower the risk of flooding in the areas they are designed to protect.

The project is aimed particularly at protecting El Mojón and the municipalities of Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro del Pinatar, which have suffered torrential rainfall in recent years.

Objections, technical reports and environmental assessment

The outstanding procedures for phase one include resolving the objections submitted, issuing technical reports and completing the environmental assessment, ahead of the subsequent final approval of the projects.

The information presented at the meeting therefore places these measures in the administrative stage before implementation, rather than describing construction already under way or flood defences currently in service.

The €10.5 million relates to the first phase, which is included in the Flood Risk Management Plan for the Segura river basin district.

It also forms part of the priority measures being pursued to strengthen flood protection around the Mar Menor.

The CHS and residents’ representatives agreed on the importance of maintaining regular communication so that progress on the projects can be followed as the administrative procedures move forward.
