Orihuela singer Esmeralda Grao will pay tribute to Miguel Hernández this Friday, 30 October, at 7.30pm in the town’s La Lonja auditorium, with free admission until the venue reaches capacity.

The performance marks the 116th anniversary of the poet’s birth and is organised by the Fundación Cultural Miguel Hernández, with support from Orihuela Town Council’s Culture Department.

Entitled ‘En Orihuela, su pueblo y el mío. A propósito de Miguel Hernández’, the show offers a musical and poetic introduction to the life and work of the Orihuela-born writer.

Poems turned into songs

The project began in 2010 with the recording of the album ‘Su pueblo y el mío’, whose sponsors included the cultural foundation that bears the poet’s name.

Grao turns Hernández’s verses into songs through a contemporary musical approach, while retaining a connection to Spanish folk traditions in her interpretation of the texts.

The singer also created the show’s dramatic structure, which explores different periods and aspects of the writer’s life, bringing the musical repertoire into a stage production about his career.

To introduce that journey to a variety of audiences, the production draws on poetry, theatre, war chronicles, letters and other writing by Miguel Hernández as material for the performance.

The voice of Ginés García Millán

One element of the show is the voice of Murcia-born actor Ginés García Millán, who brings the poet’s texts to life and provides a connecting thread throughout the production.

His announced contribution is his voice within the show, which combines Grao’s musical work with the different forms of Hernández’s writing.

This evening’s event therefore brings together the performance of poems as songs and a dramatic structure designed to explore both the author’s life and his work.

La Lonja hosts the tribute in Orihuela, the town shared by singer and poet, at an event open to the public with admission limited to the seats available in the auditorium.
