The head of CEIP Playas de Orihuela has called at a council meeting for action on the school’s heating and lift, while mayor Pepe Vegara has announced an interim contract for schools without heating.
María Teresa Haba, head of this Orihuela Costa school with more than 600 pupils, said its boiler had not worked for approximately a year and its lift remained out of service.
The maintenance complaints were raised during the public participation section, where a representative of families also sought explanations about electrical repairs at several schools across the municipality.
A timetable for each school
Haba said school management teams spend some of their time repeating reports of problems already known to the council, and warned of the consequences of another winter without heating.
She requested a programme of work for each school, with named responsibilities and planned dates, describing problems beyond her own site, including accessibility difficulties, deteriorated sports courts and facilities awaiting repair.
Vegara responded in the absence of education councillor Vicente Pina, saying that the technical specifications for the boiler maintenance contract were in the final stage of drafting.
That contract will cover inspections, servicing and repairs; the mayor also said an interim contract had been prepared to provide an immediate solution, including for CEIP Playas de Orihuela.
He explained that the education department had joined a new municipal supplies contract after the previous materials contract was exhausted, and expressed willingness to meet the school’s management.
Disagreement over electrical repairs
The families’ representative questioned work previously announced by Pina, saying managers at several schools reported being unaware of those interventions, and requested a record of work and dates for each school.
The council responded by listing files concerning electrical repairs and replacement parts, including work at La Murada, Miguel Hernández, Fernando de Loaces, Arneva, Desamparados and Josefina Manresa.
During that response, the council did not specify the completion dates requested by families, leaving that point unresolved in the exchange about maintenance at the municipality’s state schools.
