The 20th Encuentro Flamenco Ciudad de Torrevieja brought the Ballet Español Flamenco de Lo Ferro to a full Teatro Municipal, in a gala organised by Casa de Andalucía Rafael Alberti with the support of the Culture Department.
The association’s president, Rosa Martínez, presented the evening, which included honours for figures from the flamenco world and the announcement of a forthcoming charity event.
Gold honours and a December charity gala
Casa de Andalucía awarded its Escudo de Oro to Julio Cegarra, director of the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas in La Unión, recognising his links with the festival and work promoting flamenco.
Cegarra presented mayor Eduardo Dolón with the poster for the festival’s next edition, while culture councillor Antonio Quesada also received an Escudo de Oro from the association.
Before the show, a poster was unveiled for the charity gala planned for 12 December, with proceeds intended to help fund work at the Templo Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción.
Ballet de Lo Ferro takes centre stage
Flamenco scholar and poet Luis Terry introduced the performance by the Ballet Español Flamenco de Lo Ferro, directed by María Dolores Ros.
The cast featured guitarist Juan Antonio Mateos and singer Rocío de Amparo, alongside dancers Rocío Santiago, Aitana Ros, Alba Gil and Martina Gómez.
Patricia Enrique, Fran Serrano, Domingo Muñoz and Antonio Muñoz also danced in a production bringing together Spanish dance and flamenco.
The repertoire included “Rondela”, “Anda Jaleo” and “Farruca”, alongside soleá por bulerías, alegrías de Córdoba, mirabrás and romera.
Martinete and seguiriya also formed part of the musical journey, which ended with a fiesta por bulerías drawing on the styles of Jerez, Triana and Utrera.
The audience gave the company a standing ovation lasting several minutes at the close of this 20th edition of the gathering.
Flamenco representatives attending included Cayetano Padilla Ruiz, from the Peña Flamenca de Lorca, and Mariano Escudero, from the Festival de Lo Ferro.
Alongside the mayor and culture councillor, those attending included Damas de la Sal Miriam Córdoba and Sara Toribio, and councillors Inmaculada Montesinos, Antonio Vidal and Trudy Páez.
